Over the past couple of months we’ve brought you the Summer Reading List and the Summer Watching List. Today we’re bringing you the last article in the series, our listening list. When I sat down to write this I thought, now that it’s September–the smell of pumpkin beers in the air–I guess we better call this the Fall Listening List BUT I’ve been reminded that it’s still technically summer until September 22 so we’re going to stretch this out for as long as possible!
So, before the leaves start changing colours, let’s squeeze the last drops out of summer. As usual, I’ve spoken to some of the women of SOBDL to bring you a list of podcasts we’re listening to right now and, last but not least, a surprise that no one asked for, I’m sharing a few great songs I’ve discovered on TikTok because we love some Gen Z talent!
Podcasts
The Daily
A daily podcast produced by The New York Times with short digestible episodes (~20 mins) breaking down some of the biggest stories in our world. It’s a great way to pass the time on your commute to work or dog walk while sharpening your mind and understanding of current issues.
This Might Get Weird
Because who doesn’t want to pass the time listening to two comedian best friends (Grace and Mamrie) discuss their crazy day to day adventures?
Unladylike
Just an overall rad feminist podcast. Hosts Cristen and Caroline investigate how women are doin’ it for themselves in spite of all those unwritten but all-too-real bullsh*t expectations of how we should live our lives. Each episode starts with a question that C&C tackle through their trademark obsessive research, stories from rule-breaking’ ladies and a solid dose of delightful feminist rage.
I Weigh
What started with a social media post has become a movement, and now a podcast. On I Weigh, Jameela Jamil challenges society’s definition of worth through weight by asking different thought-leaders, performers, activists, influencers, and friends about how they are working through their past shames to find where their value truly lies. With hilarious and vulnerable conversations, I Weigh will amplify and empower diverse voices in an accessible way to celebrate progress, not perfection.
LeVar Burton Reads
Just LeVar reading short stories. The podcast tagline is “The Best Short Fiction, Handpicked by the Best Voice in Podcasting” and, honestly, that’s all you need to know.
Unf*ck your brain
UnF*ck Your Brain is the podcast for high-achieving feminist women who struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome. If you know you’ve accomplished a lot professionally but still secretly feel like you’re unqualified….if you want to feel confident but you worry about what everyone else thinks about you…if you want to succeed but fear failure…this podcast is for you.
Emsolation
In this time of lockdown, it’s time to tune in and switch off. Let Em Rusciano speak to you in her soothing tones (NB: not at all soothing) as she chats pop culture with her best friend Michael Lucas and gets positive advice from her life coach husband Scott.
1619
“1619” is a New York Times audio series, hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones, that examines the long shadow of American slavery, connecting past and present through the oldest form of storytelling.
Bananas
Bananas is a new podcast from the Exactly Right network. Hosts Kurt Braunohler and Scotty Landes read wacky headlines from around the world and the unbelievable stories behind them. Their banter is hilarious. Good for a laugh during these weird times we’re in.

From infidelity, to sexlessness, to loss, it’s a space for people to be heard and understood. It’s also a place for us to listen and feel empowered in our own relationships.
TikTok Music
If you, like me, are a millennial that discovered (and became obsessed with) TikTok during self-isolation hi, welcome! TikTok has quickly become one of my favorite sources for new music of the extremely upbeat and pop-y variety. Because my friends are sick of me sending them yet another TikTok video–CEO of sending unrequited TikToks over here–I thought I’d share a few of my favorite songs with you. Get your hairbrush out and get ready to boogie. And let me know if you like them!
